I patched timeline version 1.0.141, so it compiles and runs with vdr-1.6.0.
The i18n patch from 
http://vdrbox.lautre.net/fichiers/VDR/patchs/timeline/01-timeline-1.0.141-gettext-i18n.diff 
is also included (see also http://www.vdr-portal.de/board/thread.php?threadid=76080&hilight=timeline)

Please test this version on UTF-8 systems.
